The last few months have signified another raft of good news for the British retail food industry. Following on from the news that the UK Food and Grocery Market is set for rapid growth, July saw the announcement that sales in the frozen food sector have now reached £6.1 billion. Obviously, our expertise in refrigerated vehicles makes this news exceptionally relevant to our customers here at CoolKit, so we thought it was worth taking a closer look.
According to recent statistics released by Kantar Worldpanel, an international market research company, over the past twelve months the retail sales of frozen foods in the UK have grown by 5.4%, bringing them up to £6.1 billion. It appears to be savoury foods that have been particularly big drivers of the market, especially frozen pizza, and frozen bread and savoury bakery goods. These market elements altogether now have a combined increase of more than £100 million, year on year, representing 16% of the total value of the frozen food market.
Similarly, ice cream did particularly well in the 52 weeks up until June 2018, representing 7.7% of the frozen food market’s value. As you might expect, the recent heatwave did wonders for the sales of ice cream, which saw a recent spike in the summer months, with volumes still expected to rise further before the end of the year.
Obviously, specialised refrigerated vehicles like those we stock here at CoolKit have always been invaluable to the frozen food industry, as our vehicles make up a crucial link in the Cold Chain. If you’re not familiar with the term, the Cold Chain is essentially the name for the temperature-controlled supply chain that accounts for the storage, transportation and distribution of frozen food.
If this Cold Chain is broken at any point from frozen food’s manufacture to its eventual distribution to customers, then the food becomes ruined, and not fit for sale. For that reason, the reliability, economy and efficiency of fridge and freezer vans are always a top priority for those working in the frozen food industry, from small sole traders right through to the biggest of retail supermarkets.
We cater to both these types of customer and more here at CoolKit, and focus on providing exactly the same level of high-quality service to each and every one. What’s more, frozen food accounts for a significant number of our core markets, including:
Today, our fridge and freezer vans can be fitted with a number of advanced technologies such as our Start/Stop solution, designed to make drivers’ and fleet managers’ lives even easier by automating time-consuming or business critical process, making it easier than ever to ensure that the Cold Chain is kept intact.
