One of the most recognisable names in motoring, Ford, has just announced their latest transit vehicle. As a name synonymous with quality and reliability, we stock many Ford vans here at CoolKit, passing their benefits onto you, our customers. That’s part of the reason why this week, we thought it was worth taking a look in more detail at Ford’s latest announcement, and what its new vehicle has in store.
Right off the bat, it’s obvious that this latest iteration of Ford’s Transit Custom van has been the subject of serious work by its engineers. It features a brand new design that’s available in a number of formats, including two roof heights, two wheelbase lengths, and a gross vehicle mass range between 2.6 tonnes to 3.4 tonnes. The most heavy-duty formats can tolerate payloads of up to 1450kg (though obviously if we were to get one through here at CoolKit, some of that weight would be taken up by one of our insulated lining kits).
Another notable aspect of the new Ford Transit is the clever use of load-space, which makes use of a load-through hatch in the bulkhead. This is in addition to a roof-mounted rack that can be folded away when not in use.
In keeping with the industry’s shifting focus towards ensuring environmental friendliness and efficiency, the Ford Transit Custom’s 2.0 litre EcoBlue diesel engine (available in 105PS, 130PS and 170PS) has had its fuel efficiency boosted by up to 13% and its low-end torque increased by 20%. Ford has even gone one step further – an ECOnetic version of this engine produces official emissions of 148g per km, and a combined fuel consumption of just under 50 miles per gallon.
In just over a year’s time, from 2019 the Ford Transit Custom will also be available as a Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle form. This version of the van will use Ford’s 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine to give the finished vehicle a zero-emission range of over 30 miles. When considered altogether, the various forms of the Transit Custom embody a worthy testament to Ford’s commitment to its environmental obligations going forward.
Finally, owners of the Transit Custom will also be able to enjoy LED daytime running lights and powerful Xenon headlights for the darker times of the evening. In the cabin itself, there are many available storage areas to suit busy drivers, or those making exceptionally long-distance journeys.
