Picture this – 300 football pitches laid side by side. Now imagine just a handful of people assembling 376 vans each day. Not possible? I have seen it with my own eyes.
Together with our Managing Director Rupert Gatty, I was invited to visit the Volkswagen factory in Wrzesnia, Poland, which solely produces the award-winning Volkswagen Crafter vehicle. The factory opened in 2017 and spans 220 hectares.
It was like a sci-fi movie as we were transported up and down the neat rows of futuristic machinery dutifully assembling their required part for the vehicle.
It was a fantastic opportunity to look around the factory and see how their vehicles are built. We got to see the work involved at each stage of the build right through to the Crafter coming off the assembly line.
CoolKit were one of the selected vehicle converters who were invited on the tour. This was the first time we have visited the factory – and we also had the opportunity to strengthen our relationship with some of our contacts from Volkswagen following CoolKit being named as one of their Integrated Partner in 2017.
The new site uses automated machinery to construct the vehicles, with minimal handling required. Now obviously, for a company that has a long heritage spanning 60 years, selling tens of thousands of vans each year worldwide, they also have the investment to match.
The Crafter was one of the most popular medium refrigerated vans for CoolKit in 2018. Customers like the expansive load space, and practical yet comfortable cab. Professional reviews – as well as many of our clients – have noted that the van is surprisingly easy to drive considering its size, and its fuel economy is respectable too.
We know that all models of the Volkswagen Crafter are highly reliable, and individual models like the Trendline can also come with a range of additional features, such as ABS braking, automatic hazard lights, and engine immobilisers. The Crafter has also won more than its fair share of industry awards in recognition of its build quality, versatility and overall value.
Volkswagen are also responding to consumer needs by developing their electric vehicles range, and we are excited to find out what they will be exhibiting at The Commercial Vehicle Show later this year, which I will be attending.
CoolKit will be showcasing a Volkswagen Crafter refrigerated vehicle at the CV Show in the CoolZone Stand No 3C50. The Trendline model will be specified as a dual-temperature conversion and will feature a range of exciting features including a moveable bulkhead, GRP textured anti-slip floor, pallet loading protection pack and our own CurtAir system.
