Since its first launch decades ago, the Renault Trafic has established a firm reputation for itself as one of the UK’s most popular light commercial vans – which is just one of the reasons it maintains such a regular presence in our own stock of refrigerated vans here at CoolKit. It’s the fourth best selling mid-size van in Britain, a popular option amongst both small businesses and SMEs. That includes many of our customers here at CoolKit, as you’ll already know if you saw our latest post on the most popular refrigerated vehicles of 2018! An excellent all-rounder, the Renault Trafic is an affordable and highly versatile option. Let’s take a closer look at what makes it such an attractive choice.
The Renault Trafic’s reliability is one of the key draws for many business owners; it’s known for being highly dependable, even by the high standards of commercial vehicle owners. Plus, most of its mechanical parts are shared with other vehicles across the Renault range, which means that on the occasions that a part does fail, it’s generally not too difficult to procure a replacement.
It also comes in three standard trim levels: Business, Business+, and Sport. Considered all together, it means that buyers have a broad range of choice when it comes to picking the van that suits their style and budget. (For lots of our customers here at CoolKit, many of them tend to find that a standard panel van in the Business trim is more than enough for their needs.)
They all share the hallmarks of Renault’s stellar design. One of these hallmarks is that the Trafic is undeniably pleasant to drive, with its weighted steering and lack of body roll. And of course, all the individual models share the same distinctive but restrained aesthetic that makes the Renault Trafic such a recognisable presence on British roads.
The full range of Renault Trafic vehicles uses a selection of engines across different models, all based around a modern 1.6 litre dCi diesel engine. The most powerful versions use twin turbochargers to give themselves a bit of extra boost, whereas all others manage quite comfortably on a single turbocharger. When the Trafic’s engines were overhauled to bring it in line with the Euro 6 regulations a few years ago, in addition to emissions-reducing technology the engines also each received a boost of 5 horsepower. For the single turbos, this brings them to 95hp and 120hp respectively, while the twin turbo engines boast a highly respectable 125hp and 145hp.
As well as their excellent performance, the Renault Trafic engines across the board also share the fridge van’s impressive fuel economy. The offically-claimed figures stand at 47.2 miles per gallon with Euro 6 engines, and while most people expect there to be some degree of manufacturer optimism in on-paper mpg estimations, the Renault Trafic does a great job of actually reflecting this fantastic fuel economy.
Another aspect of the Renault Trafic that makes it an attractive option for customers across a range of sectors, the cabin is notable for having an appealing interior that’s been described affectionately as ‘car-like’ by a number of reviewers. Any drivers or sole traders who regularly find themselves doing business on the roads will find a lot of value in the clever cab features, which include a middle seat cushion that folds down to form a desk. What’s more, cradles for smartphones and tablets are available to attach to the top of the dashboard. A quick note here, though – it’s worth making sure that one of these cradles can actually fit your device if you’re planning on investing in one. (One of the drawbacks of living in the fast-moving personal technology world!)
As with the vast majority of the refrigerated vans that we stock here at CoolKit, the Renault Trafic comes with a wide range of handy features, from standard inclusions to optional extras. For the Short Wheel Base, Business model of Renault Trafic that we currently have in stock, the standard safety features include:
From a further security perspective, a steel bulkhead is included on all Trafic panel vans, plus an alarm system. Meanwhile, the interior cab features include a DAB radio with Bluetooth, a 12v power socket, and even an ECO mode button.
